Well hello!

It's been a long time and I hope this finds you both in good health and high spirits. First off apologies for being sh*t/lame/uncommunicado etc. I blame Tim, just bcos..well no. No excuse really. Secondly belated Happy Birthdays, Merry Christmas, and Happy New Year! And Thirdly....congratulations on the journey so far! Now the formalities are out of the way, how the heck are you guys?

Things are as they usually are here, although we've had an introducion to a wii - but thats another story altogether. Me and Jec are cool, still living in the same house (with the temp tenants - aka spoon & Benny) Jobs good - coordinating and colouring in maps (and you thought I'd never get paid for that!) Jecs now a project manager at Build Charity which has really taken off and she is expected to launch it county wide.

Have had a few hols last year to Slovenia (ask tim about the Cajves) But mostly the year was full of weddings (6 in all) Not us of course! How about you two?

This year will hopefully involve the Swarzwald und das Hong Kong as my whole family is congregating in Kowloon Bay in the summer....

Anyway this was really just a 'quick' note to say hey we're still here, your still there, your good, we're good and tim will courier the love over when he visits in April

Ma and Pa Mixer here safely after horrible journey involving fog-bound airports, diversions for refuelling and lost luggage! They arrived in remarkably good spirits however and haven't melted yet... Off to the Selous tomorrow.

Doesn't time go SO quickly!?! Can’t believe it was over a year ago we met just before you began your African adventure!

Just been reading your diary and having a sneak at your photos...all so inspiring, and yes I am extremely jealous!

Now living in Brighton, I'm off to France in a month for the winter in Val D'Isere, very exciting! Poor Bambi is off the road, but all wrapped up so will be safe till the next adventure in summer. There's a rally from London to Mongolia, which is very tempting, have to have a vehicle over 15 years old and with a 1 litre or less engine, i.e. Bambi!

News here is that Natt is moving to France to chef for a ski season, Richard has bought a flat on Cambridge St, Carney has bought a dog, and it's mine and Sarah's 9 month anniversary on saturday. Came across your site after just doing some browsing, as you do, and read to the end in one go, good stuff, entertaining and informative.
Question - do you still have problems with dust getting in through the back door?
You've seen the "bakkies" in S.Africa with the canopies over the pick up bed and have you seen how they often slide open the two side windows at the back of the canopy and inch or two when on dusty roads?
If somehow you could build up a positive pressure in the body it would stop most of the dust, maybe having two vents near the rear or opening a window or two near the back if you are driving above a few miles per hour.
I used to drive for one of the overland companies for many years and it's something we used to do on dry dusty roads.
If you know about this then ignore all of the last!
Anyway, good luck with whatever you are doing.

Guys, its been a while since we partied in Namibia and watched both the Aussies and the Poms lose out in the world Cup. Hope all is well, i hope lil Alfy is going strong and i hope the Mog is truckin away. I finished my stint in Africa then moved to that lovely place called England where Europe was my playground, Spain, France, Portugal - we tore up all those places and had a blast. Ireland next stop - was awesome then i hit the States for a coupla weeks. I hope everythings cool, good luck for the rest and keep in touch.

Bizarrely for someone who doesn't like dogs, I've actually been looking forward to see Alfie again, I don't really care much for seeing those other two though....only joking!

Anyway, I've had enough of using Hungarian keyboards, the y is swapped round with the z and all the punctuation marks are in the wrong place. It's still easier then a French keyboard...

Well I've been exceedingly crap... having never posted on here. So here I am...

Glad to read of your adventures... the thought of getting on the tube tomorrow is very inspiring!

Jill's become a wrestler. She now goes by the name of Spanky McGibbon... her move is the nipple cripple. very dangerous indeed. Merciless she is. So while she tours the world having latex inspired fun I'm left here to look after the gorgeous cats... then what happens!? They up sticks too and join the circus. It turns out Quita is great at spinning plates... who'd have thought it... quite amazing considering she's only eve used those plastic things.. oh, and the fact she's incapable of abstract thought and has no thumbs... but she's surmounted those problems remarkably. Pablo has tagged along for the ride, and he can hang out with the lions too... he seems to think he's one of them.

So here I am all on my lonesome... oh well. Football season just around the corner eh!. Oh yeah, I'm signed up to a 10k run. Haha yeah I know. They said something about sausages so I signed on the line. then I realised how far 10k is.

well that's enough of me and my inspirational tales... time for bed.

I'm counting the days until I go to Cape Town! It actually feels real now there's only a few weeks to go.

If anyone wants me to take anything to the Mogsters, then let me know and I'll happily oblige (customs permitting!)

Update on using Google Earth for a route planner: the coverage of Africa is really poor, so I'm not going to bother. Will try to keep the map updated though...Any more suggestions would be welcomed.

To Mr + Mrs Mixer: I haven't forgotten to look for computers for you, I've just been stupidly busy working all hours to earn some travelling money! I'm also off to Budapest for a week before Cape Town... Dell probably still is the way to go in terms of ease + value for money, I'll speak to you soon about it.

A new month and I've already managed to delete 4 or 5 entries from the message board, I do apologise!

I've just come back from camping on Smock Mill Common and in typical British camping style, the weather in the evening was lovely until the skies opened and it's been raining ever since.

I've tidied up a few of the new photos, are all chickens that colour pink in Togo? (I saw the previous comments before deleting them!)

Happy may day, I'm off to charge round a pole and do a bit of Morris dancing. I might even build a wicker man and do some other Beltane activities....

glad you are over malaria. janey - you first had malaria when you were about two i think. i had it several times - down to 8 stone in nairobi hospital in 1975 (i think) despite being on paludrin - which i think is now a bit useless.

anyway we are in spain at nerja, and the weather is back to usual. we were in mountains for lunch yesterday - it snowed ! off to seville at the weekend.

the photos are a lot more interesting - prefer them to people. and the narrative is as good as ever. i look forward to the book, or you could do a hammond innes and wrap a story round the trip - or parts of it. get thinking....

hows tricks? i know ive been uber crap at staying in touch, but you know me, always away, and rarely in the house when im not. still have regularly perused your fantastic site and diary and the H-man and suz keep me informed of your antics. particularly enjoyed the account of the wedding, bizzare! there is such a travel book to be made of thisand you have the perfect notebook in the form of this site. im all good here, still robbing graves and even landind the odd job near brighton now and again. i cut two foot of dreads off recently, a kinda just been dumped midlife crisis event, but love the rebrand! super skint after a �600 car bill first week of january, but have lost the beer belly as a result that id been working on over christmas so not a bad trade off really. very nearly went signed up to a dig in albania for the summer, sadly financially its just not viable, and at two months long with all the work going to the proffessors name, nota fantastic career move either. maybe next year.... well im gonna sign off now before i clog a site about you guys with waffle about me (still my favourite subject) but send the three of you big love, and well, what can is say, just because im a lame ass at stying in touch doesn't mean i dont think of you all all the time. take care, drive safe, and get that alternater fixed because im running out of extension lead s here BIIIIGGGUUUPPPP! to alfie

Loved the wedding! Don't know what it is about Segou, but when we were there last Christmas we had a very similar experience at a cousin of our chum's wedding. Your posting bought back some great memories of a completely chaotic scramble through the back streets followed by an even more chaotic but wonderfully good natured reception. I managed to do my Christmas Eve present shopping in a PB of 1 hour 30 mins (and that included wrapping). It helped that I knew what I was getting everyone!

A very belated Happy Birthday miss J - it sounded like you had a lovely day!!!

I was going to have an early nite last nite, and I thought I would just catch up on the latest diary entries (seeing as I had only read up until Alquezar until yesterday) before I went to sleep, but it was 1AM before I was done!!! So, I am blaming you three for my distracted state at work today!!! :)

So, if I wasn't green before, I am now positively Hulk-green with envy - your entries are a joy to read, and the pictures a pleasure to behold. Please, please keep 'em coming - they will help me keep my sanity as the darkness comes over us for the next few months, and the North Pole sends us the best it has to offer in terms of wind.

Anyways, I shall email you with a more detailed update on events in Brighton shortly. Take care of yous and I hope Mauritania turns into as good an adventure (if not better) as Morocco was!!

P.S. I will be going to Lagos, Nigeria at some stage this spring (date not decided yet), and SA just after Easter - I have no idea about the timing, but maybe I'll be able to catch up with you in either spot.... I'll cross my fingers...

Like you we also plan to bring our dog ( a hungarian pointer) and we are very interested how the trip goes with the dog. Not many people bring their dog with them so we where glad to find your website. We have been to Mauretanie with her in april/may this year and it was super!
